North American Harvard IIB at HIET

E-mail Print

One of the premier private Engineering institues in Chennai is the Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology. The college not only offers Aero engineering curriculum training, but also flying training thru its Orient Flying School. The HIET at one point of time had some gems like a DH-82 Tigermoth, Stinson Sentinel and Harvard.

The Harvard is in quite good condition and must be one of the very few held by a private institution. It is painted yellow and is just outside the HIET's main building. No information is available on its previous history or registrations. Overall this well maintained aircraft is a far cry from the derelict lying in Chennai that is mentioned in other pages.

The view from the front. The massive radial engine and the prop dominate the profile of the Harvard. Pic Courtesy : B Harry.
A better side profile fo the Harvard indicates that the Rudder of the aircraft seem to be from some other aircraft. Also note the false VT Registration.  Pic Courtesy : B HarryClick to Enlarge

The Harvard sports a false registration VT-KCG - which are the intials of the chairman of the College. The Rudder of the aircraft is clearly not a Harvards. It lacks the rounded pointed profile on the top. Can anyone id the Rudder for us?
